Bolder Agency, for the third consecutive year, had the opportunity to moderate the entire program of the Third Expert ISPU Conference (ISPU – Informacijski sustav prostornog uređenja) — the central annual gathering of experts in spatial planning, construction, architecture, and public administration, dedicated to the digital transformation of the spatial planning system. The three-day conference took place in Cavtat, aiming to present the latest developments in permit issuance, spatial plan preparation, real estate management, building energy certification, and management of public authority regime systems.

The conference was opened by the host, Branko Bačić, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Spatial Planning, Construction, and State Property of Croatia. He stated that the ISPU system enables more efficient and transparent space management, while digital solutions developed by the ministry facilitate faster and easier communication between citizens, investors, and public administration. The conference highlighted Croatia’s leadership in digitalization of spatial planning among European countries, with 808 spatial plans currently being digitized, ensuring equal treatment of land across the entire country, which was not the case before. During the ceremonial part of the program, annual awards were presented to the top users of the ISPU system, recognizing exceptional results in system use, accuracy, and efficiency. “We look forward to the next conference in 2026!”

Bolder Agency provided public relations support to the Association of Cities, which organized the second edition of the Urban Forum titled “Perspectives of Sustainable Cities.” The event gathered about one hundred participants, including representatives of the European Commission, local and regional self-government units, development agencies, and ministries. The goal was to identify solutions, best practices, and financing models for all cities aiming to plan sustainably, considering the ecological and social dimensions of local development. Urban development is extremely important because cities are the economic engines of the European Union, generating 85 percent GDP and 75 percent of employment.

The event presented the initial results of the Urban Development Fund, which has so far approved 24,4 million euros. A total of six projects were financed: construction of a sports center, construction of an office building, an Integration Center, renovation of a resort, and reconstruction of a cultural center and interpretation center.

During the forum, guidelines for the new EU agenda for cities and the urban dimension of the 2028–2034 financial period were also presented, with an emphasis on European priorities for sustainable urban development. It was concluded that urban development is much more than spatial planning, and the main question is how cities will respond today to all possible climate, digital, social, economic, and security challenges.

Although a seemingly simple expression, ganbatte has its roots in Japanese tradition and is one of the motivational threads of Japanese culture. Ganbatte is a specific outlook on life that focuses on doing our best and not giving up. Ganbatte teaches perseverance, determination, overcoming obstacles and motivation regardless of how difficult the challenge may be.

In translation, ganbatte means – “do your best, try hard, do it the best you can, and if things don’t go your way, okay, you shouldn’t feel bad about it, because you know you did your best.” In the book “Ganbatte – The Japanese Art of Always Moving Forward“ by the author duo Hector Garcia and Francesco Miralles, there is a list of some practical ganbatte tips for entrepreneurs:

Do it!

If you have no experience, start, you will learn along the way.

Make a mistake, you can learn a lot from it.

Be persistent, you can learn a lot from it.

Strive for perfection in everything!

Surround yourself with people who share your vision.

Never stop learning!

Be patient.

Introduce yourself to the world!

Listen to your intuition!

It is our decision how we will deal with life’s difficulties and how we will approach everyday challenges and tasks. For all those who apply Japanese resilience and tenacity to their own lives and begin to believe in their abilities, difficult situations will become easy and impossible situations will become possible.

This blog was written by the artificial intelligence system ChatGPT answering the questions about trends in public relations in 2023. The blog was created in less than ten seconds and provides “possible new trends in public relations based on current industry developments and new technologies”. It’s fascinating how this tool is already changing the marketing and PR industry, with PR professionals using it to write blogs, articles and social media posts.

Here’s what ChatGPT states:

Increased focus on purpose-driven communication which involves promoting a brand’s values and social impact and also greater use of social media influencers. There will be more emphasis on storytelling, compelling narratives that resonate with their audience and build emotional connections. Brands will increasingly accept artificial intelligence, and the most represented tools will be chatbots, automated media monitoring and sentiment analysis tools. When it comes to relations with the media, there is a growing trend in Europe of targeting local and regional media with the aim of increasing visibility and credibility. And finally, there will be a greater emphasis on crisis management.

If you add to this what the trends will be in the US, ChatGPT also emphasizes the strengthening of the DEI initiative (diversity, equality and inclusion) in PR and the greater use of interactive content in PR campaigns. And finally, strengthening the role of data and analytics as PR becomes increasingly data driven.

The text written by the AI was full of redundant phrases and could have been written by any PR professional with a year’s experience. There are no new facts. But it’s fascinating what can be achieved with this tool and how much the tool is already changing the marketing and PR industry. In Croatia, many PR professionals use it for SEO, writing blogs, articles and posts for social networks, thus freeing up time for strategic thinking.

The strategy of "marginal gains" was designed and applied by Dave Brailsford, when he was appointed as one of the directors of the British Cycling at 2003. At the time he took over then organization, British cyclists were achieving mediocre results and had not won the Tour de France in 100 years. His philosophy was to look for small signs of progress in whatever you are doing. As he himself explained: "The whole principle came from the idea that if you take everything you know about cycling and break it down into small parts, and then improve each one by 1 percent, when you put it all together, you get a big improvement“.

This meant redesigning the bicycle seat, rubbing the tires with alcohol to make them stick better, wearing electrically heated sports shorts, using new massage gels, different pillows for athletes to sleep on… As a result of everything, the British from 2007 to 2017 won 178 world championships and 66 gold medals at the OI or Paralympic Games. In addition, they also conquered the Tour de France. This philosophy can be applied to every area of life – sport, technology, education, business, etc. If you break the services you provide into segments and introduce minimal improvement in each segment like better preparation for each meeting with, for example, only 3 key points, more
efficient time management, more purposeful meetings, more concise materials for the media, strengthening of networking with your important target groups, etc. at the end of the year, the result will not be lacking. The number of satisfied clients should grow, as should the balance on business accounts.

At this time last year, Robert Torre, a respected clinical psychiatrist and author of several books in the field of psychiatry, passed away. My favorite books are “Madness Strikes Back” and “Is There Life Before Death?”

He presented several great thoughts in those books, and one of them is about the importance of doing good. As Torre says “when we are doing good, we feel good, good things come from a good state od mind and consequently being good makes good. Goodness rewards itself, and if it is rewarded beyond itself, the more and the better.“ Could it be easier?

Giving away your work to individual clients can also mean good. Those who really appreciate your time, experience, and advice. Therefore, every year I choose a client for whom I provide free PR support for their project. Feeling of added value that I provide unexpectedly and free of charge is important for me and my business. Some of the lovely stories that came out of such collaboration:

The worldwide success of Klaić children hospital in rescuing a girl who fell under a tractor:

Dali su joj dva posto šanse za život, sad ide kući

Celebration of 30 years of the AIKIDO society which provided free aikido training and participation in
all other contents of Japanese culture in the House of Aikido, such as calligraphy, sushi making or
Japanese film evenings:

AIKIDO ZAGREB SLAVI 30 GODINA: Tijekom rujna očekuju vas raznovrsni besplatni sadržaji

In a great book by the Icelandic author Halldora Thoradlsen, I read how alienation screams under the guise of excessive communication, speed, consumer fever. It strives for some general satisfaction. Reckless exploitation is followed by an unbearable illusion and this lie brings us to our knees. Where is the square, the children and the game, the old people on the benches and the time we once had enough of?

We have stopped playing and looking at the world through children’s eyes and are guided by their sincerity and simplicity, without complications. This blog does not bring any life wisdom. It is dedicated to all people who have not stopped being children.

This topic is best illustrated by the conversation of a grandfather with his grandson, described in the book “Every morning, the way home is getting longer”. Namely, the teacher asked the students to write what they considered the meaning of life. One boy wrote – socializing. Grandfather agreed that was the best answer he had ever heard. However, the teacher requested that the answer be elaborated and written much longer. The boy answered – I consider socializing and ice cream to be the meaning of my life.

On another occasion, teacher asked them to write a story about what they want to be when they grow up. The same boy wrote that he would like to be small and not grown up, because adults are always angry, and only children and old people laugh. The teacher said that he did not understand the task. The boy replied that she did not understand the answer.

I have been postponing writing this blog for month, out of laziness. Everything I write about is so important for my work and career advancement because it is all about lifelong learning. This year I had the opportunity to moderate/host more than 25 different events (workshops, conferences, seminars, press conferences) for various clients – ministries, agencies, non-governmental organizations.

Although I have been working in public relations and Journalism for 20 years, I felt the need to work with an expert and learn the basic techniques, exercises and possibilities of articulation and intonation of my voice. My goal was to find the strongest position of my voice. The choice fell on Anita Tripala, a great phonetician from HRT who is currently successfully running her own business Jaka jeka.

Anita told me that she was a demanding teacher and that I should prepare myself for a difficult and dedicated training. We set high goals – to learn how to relax, to learn vocal exercises and pronunciation before the performance and to work together on synopsis and shorten them meaningfully.

I started applying everything I learned before every performance and it took me exactly 10 minutes. I learned a lot about myself, how to make every performance high-quality and impressive, and how to successfully deal with stage fright before public performances. I was very motivated for work, and she praised my appropriate speaking behavior and assured me that the performances would be enjoyable both for me and the audience. That’s exactly what happened. I strongly recommend Anita to anyone who needs help with speech, because she is a great professional who does her job with great love, expertise and with proven results.

Lately Bolder was part of another interesting project – for the Croatian Green Building Council, we promoted the first Guide on green public procurement. This guide provides examples of best practices in green public procurement in the construction of sustainable buildings in the countries of the European Union – Finland, Denmark, Italy and others.

In addition, the guide provides interesting numerical indicators: almost a quarter of a million of European public bodies annually spend about 14% of their total GDP on the procurement of services, works and supplies. It is well known that strategic public procurement offers great opportunities for stronger stimulation of the economy. Furthermore, buildings in Europe are responsible for 40 percent of energy consumption, 36 percent of CO2 emissions and 35 percent of generated waste. The conclusion is obvious: we need better quality buildings made of sustainable materials that will ensure higher energy efficiency, economic viability and environmental sustainability.

The project therefore encourages EU countries to adopt criteria in their national legislation to assess the sustainability of buildings, considering the entire life of the building from material production, construction, operational life of the building, deconstruction and demolition.

Green public procurement refers to three key indicators: life cycle assessment, life cycle costs and indoor air quality.

Finally, the Croatian Green Building Council proposed a further step and contribution to increase of sustainable construction. It has prepared Memorandum of Understanding for public authorities, cities, counties and private sector companies to include these measurable indicators in their procurement processes and thus contribute to human health and the environment.

The guide is available at the link: Life-Levels-Best-Practice-Guide-GPP_FINAL_compressed-1.pdf (lifelevels.eu)

Very productive weekend is behind us. In Sv. Martin na Muri we organized Communication skills training for Accounting Department of a large foreign corporation. We practiced proactive communication, assertive behavior and giving feedback through methods of working in small groups, Lego challenges, role playing, group discussions, etc. The aim of the training was to find out what are the most common communication challenges faced by employees in their department and communication with clients. We defined situations and asked participants to identify communication noises and suggest solutions to avoid such situations in the future.

Participants made their own promises to share a positive attitude in future work, take the initiative, check if the other party understood their message, ask superiors for advice more often and suggest solutions and action plan in their daily work. The best part of the day was working on the “Communication Rule Book”. The Rule Book included a detailed elaboration of the principles and procedures of communication during internal meetings and online and offline meetings with the clients. Then, the participants defined how to communicate as effectively as possible by email and phone. The Rule Book is a concrete contribution of young and proactive employees to their company’s communication culture. Their ideas have been implemented on the first day they returned to work! Priceless experience!
